What is a Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF)?
A Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) is a structure established for 1-4 people helping them to create savings for retirement with support from the government including reduced tax rates on the investment earnings instead of the marginal taxation rates outside of a super fund. Due to these added tax benefits the government doesn't allow the members to access the superannuation fund until retirement.
The fund is monitored by some members working as trustees or directors of the fund. These members decide on the operation process of the fund and what investments the super fund will invest in. They are also personally responsible for complying with the law and completing all the relevant paperwork required by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) including regular auditing. The superannuation funds that meet the definition of SMSF are regulated by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Most people invest their super funds in retail or industry superannuation funds managed by large groups.
